EU – TikTok Shop: Expansion to new EU Member States 

TikTok Shop is preparing to expand its domains in Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium. This is aligned with the previously shared plans of the platform to expand its presence in the EU market. The expansion of the TikTok shop in the EU signals that social commerce algorithms can compete well with “traditional” e-commerce marketplaces. 

TikTok Shop 

TikTok Shop’s (Shop) commercial approach is significantly different from those that have been in place in other major e-commerce marketplaces. The platform combines social “interaction and storytelling” framed within short-form videos with an integrated shopping cart. 

Using this approach, it gives viewers interested in the “story” behind the video the opportunity to acquire the promoted product directly through the Shop. Social commerce is very well “accepted” in the UK and in the Asia region, and this is one of the primary reasons why ByteDance(the company behind the platform) sees a great opportunity to “shake” traditional e-commerce purchasing experience. 

Poland and Benelux 

ByteDance sees Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium as a great entry point for its business model. Poland is one of the EU’s fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the last two years, based on the customers’ purchasing habits. Netherlands and Belgium customers have a strong purchasing power, and are logistically highly developed markets with great EU ties. 

TikTok Shop and the Rest 

It will be very interesting to see how TikTok Shop, as a digital marketplace, competes with marketplaces such as Amazon, Zalando, Allegro, and others, as the “sales engine” behind the platform operates significantly in a different way. 

While the likes of Amazon and Temu are primarily search-based engines, the TikTok Shop is a “storytelling” entertainment-led sales platform. 

For third-party sellers, this difference calls for a necessary different approach when it comes to placing and selling their products. At platforms like TikTok Shop, the storytelling and influencer-led impact is what drives your numbers, and “better” reach in a sea of similar products.
