EU – Reform: EU Customs System

The European Commission is moving forward with its intention to reform the EU Customs framework.  The central piece of this regulatory reform is the establishment of a central EU Customs authority, which will play a pivotal role in developing modern, efficient, and more reliable EU customs systems.

The EU Customs Authority will oversee the EU Customs Data Hub, a central EU customs engine that will replace the individually managed customs systems in each Member State. The EU Customs Data Hub, as a central base and data repository, will be the main system to which all interested parties will make direct requests for answers to their EU customs queries.

On October 20, 2025, the EU Commission launched a project for Member States to apply to host the future EU Customs Authority. The EU Customs Authority is a central institution under the Customs reform, so the assessment is that the EU Commission is conducting an in-depth review of all candidates before making a final decision in the upcoming weeks.
