The Law on Fiscal Changes, published in the Official Gazette at the end of October 2023, has brought many significant tax changes. Some of those modifications cover VAT rate changes.
Timeline
The VAT rate changes will be applicable starting from January 1, 2024.
Impact
The adopted law introduced the following changes:
- The increase of VAT rate to 19% for food with added sugar; in this way balancing the levied rate for sugary non-alcoholic drinks;
- Restaurant and catering services remain at the 9% VAT rate, except for sales of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages(sugary drinks), subject to the 19% VAT rate;
- Increase of VAT rate from 5% to 9% for services related to access to malls, amusement parks, fairs, exhibitions, cinemas, cultural events, and sporting events.
