US – Nevada: Changes to Sales and Use Tax Filing Period

The Nevada Assembly adopted Assembly Bill 594(AB 594), which introduced changes to the filing requirements for taxable persons under the Sales and Use Tax Act. The Nevada Department of Taxation issued an informative note on this, reminding responsible taxable persons of the important change for their sales tax compliance.

The AB 594 shortens the filing period, from the end of the month following the reporting period to the 20th day of the following month. In practice, this means the average filing period is shortened by 10 days.

Timeline

The bill came into force in January 2026, meaning the first monthly return (January) should be filed under the new timeline.

The first return (January monthly return) should be filed by February 20, 2026.

Impact

A shortened filing period for sales and use tax returns means that responsible businesses have less time to reconcile their accounts, prepare exempt documentation, file, and pay any owed tax. The idea behind AB 594 was to align filing deadlines with the majority of US states, where the filing period falls around the 20th day of the month following the reporting period.

With less time at their disposal, businesses must prepare the necessary documents much more quickly to avoid late-filing penalties and fines under the Nevada Sales Tax Act.

Taxable Persons

Changes to the filing period for sales and use tax returns will unquestionably impact the operations and finance teams of all taxable persons accountable for Nevada sales tax.

Taxable persons in scope:

  • Nevada businesses registered for sales and use tax
  • Remote vendors
  • Marketplace facilitators acting as deemed suppliers
  • Financial and operational teams of large taxpayers with sales tax accountability in Nevada
