If you are familiar with the term “sales tax nexus”, you probably know that marketplace sellers in the Fulfillment by Amazon Program (FBA) for a nexus in the state where their inventory is stored. Nexus, in other words, is a strong tie with the state that makes registering at the state’s local tax authority mandatory.
Generally, the marketplace collects the sales tax on the seller’s behalf, thus allowing the owners of the FBA sellers to avoid figuring out where their inventory is stored. However, some states require registering as a sales tax collector even when the marketplace administers the tax. It is typical in cases when a seller uses other marketplaces and online selling platforms in addition to Amazon. Such sellers must collect the sales tax made from all the other sources.
