EU – E-Commerce Marketplaces: Temu’s Records Substantial Growth

Asian e-commerce marketplace Temu is booking record growth among European shoppers. The official data, shared by Temu, shows that an average of nearly 130 million European consumers per month have bought something from Temu in the second part of 2025. 

When translated into numbers, this shows a 12% increase compared to the same period in the first half of 2025. Customers from Italy and Spain were the top shoppers on Temu in 2025. 

These numbers are confirmed by the transparency report that Temu submitted to the EU Commission under the Digital Services Act. Temu, which is classified as a Very Large Operating Platform (VLOP) under the Digital Services Act, is mandated to submit a Transparency Report to the EU Commission every 6 months, following clear instructions derived from the Act and, if the Commission issues additional instructions, those as well.

Impressive Growth Numbers

The report shows impressive growth numbers. The number of customers increased substantially, from 115 million to 130 million in only six months. Temu has, in only three years since it set foot on EU soil, made a significant impact on the online economy and, indirectly, on the EU retail sector. 

Growth rates in Southern Europe are the highest. When it comes to the number of new customers added to the “basket,” Italy and Spain lead among EU countries. While the highest growth rates are from Hungary and Slovakia. 

Germany is still number one within the EU in terms of monthly users. Asian-based e-commerce marketplaces remain, combined, the most popular destinations for online ordering. The strong voices across many countries’ media outlets about the “hazardous” effects of products offered on these platforms haven’t changed consumer buying habits much.
