Shopify VAT compliance

Shopify VAT Compliance Made Simple

Selling on Shopify puts you in control of your store, and in charge of your own VAT. We deliver fully managed VAT compliance for Shopify sellers: registrations, threshold monitoring and filings across every country you sell in, so you can focus on growth instead of tax admin.

Trusted by leading companies in the industry:

The point most sellers miss

Shopify collects VAT, but it doesn’t make you compliant

Shopify’s built-in tax tools can calculate and collect the right VAT at checkout, but they do not:

  • register you for VAT in the countries where you owe it,
  • file your VAT returns or remit the tax to each authority,
  • tell you where your obligations actually sit as your sales and stock locations change.

Shopify itself is clear that setting up tax rates is your responsibility, and that you should consult a tax professional. In other words, the platform helps you charge VAT correctly, but staying compliant, registrations, filings, deadlines, is on you. That is exactly what we take off your plate.

Shopify VAT compliance

Why VAT compliance matters for Shopify sellers

Rising regulatory pressure

Tax authorities across the EU, UK and US are scrutinising cross-border ecommerce more closely every year, and getting registration or filing wrong is easy when you sell into many countries.

The business risk of non-compliance

Missed obligations can mean penalties, interest, frozen payouts through your payment provider, and blocked sales into entire markets. For a growing store, a compliance gap can stall your expansion overnight.

What sellers want

The goals we hear most often: sell into new countries without registration delays holding up launch, stay confident that every return is filed correctly and on time, and free your team from tax admin so they can focus on the store.

How we keep your Shopify store compliant

Global Shopify VAT registration and reporting

We register and report VAT for Shopify sellers across 100+ countries, so wherever you sell, your obligations are covered.

Automated threshold monitoring

We track your sales against each country’s registration threshold and flag the moment you need to register, before you cross it, not after.

Custom VAT setup by sales jurisdiction

We tailor your VAT setup to each market you sell into across the EU, UK, US and beyond, so the right treatment applies everywhere.

Full-service VAT support

From registrations to returns to correspondence with tax authorities, one team handles every transaction type for you.

Marketplace facilitator vs direct seller: know the difference

How VAT and sales tax are handled depends on how you sell:

Through the Shop App in the US

Shopify can act as a marketplace facilitator, collecting and remitting US sales tax on qualifying transactions on your behalf.

Everywhere else, and for your own storefront

You are the direct seller. That means the registration, collection and filing obligations sit with you, even when a customer buys through the Shop App.

We make sure the right rules are applied to each channel, so nothing slips through the gap between “facilitator handles it” and “you handle it.”

Simplify cross-border sales with OSS and IOSS

If you sell across the EU, the One Stop Shop (OSS) and Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) schemes can dramatically reduce your admin:

  • OSS lets you report cross-border B2C sales across the EU on a single quarterly return, instead of registering in every member state.
  • IOSS lets you collect and remit VAT on imported B2C goods valued under EUR 150 through one registration, smoothing customs and speeding delivery.

We assess whether OSS, IOSS, or country-by-country registration is the right fit for your business, and manage the scheme for you.

Shopify VAT questions, answered

How does Shopify VAT compliance work?

Shopify can calculate and collect VAT at checkout once you configure your tax settings, but you are still responsible for registering for VAT where you owe it and filing returns with each tax authority. Compliance means doing all three correctly: charging the right VAT, being registered in the right places, and filing on time. We manage the registration and filing side for you.

Does Shopify handle VAT registration and filing for me?

No. Shopify’s tax tools help you charge the correct VAT, but they do not register your business, submit your VAT returns, or tell you where your obligations sit. Those responsibilities remain with you, which is exactly where we step in.

Do I need a UK VAT registration to sell on Shopify?

It depends on where you are based, where your stock is held, and your level of sales into the UK. Many overseas sellers need to register for UK VAT from their first sale if goods are located in or shipped into the UK. We confirm whether and when you need to register.

What happens if I miss a Shopify VAT deadline?

Late or missed VAT filings typically trigger penalties and interest, and repeated issues can escalate to audits or restrictions on selling into a market. Our deadline monitoring is designed to make sure that does not happen.

Can you represent me before tax authorities?

Yes. We can act as your point of contact with tax authorities, handling correspondence, queries and filings so you do not have to navigate each country’s administration yourself.

Can Shopify sellers switch providers easily?

Yes. We review your current registrations and filings, identify any gaps, and take over without disrupting your compliance. Many sellers move to us after outgrowing a provider that only covered one or two countries.
