South Dakota Department of Revenue(DOR) is moving forward with the digitalization of tax administration operations. On June 11, 2026, the DOR emailed respective taxable entities stating that from the very beginning of July 2026, it will start the shift from sending printed Statements of Account notices to online notifications.
The registered taxable persons, who file online tax declarations and make respective remittances through their online accounts, should be aware of this change.
This concerning modification of the manner of communication between the DOR and respective taxable persons applies to notices related to:
- Missing or unfiled tax returns
- Outstanding account balances
- Credits remaining on an account
Impact on Remote Sellers
Registered remote sellers are also subject to this updated manner of communication. The lack of awareness could trigger compliance issues or penalties; the DOR advises remote sellers to take the following steps:
- Update Contact Info: Review and verify the email address and contact details on file in your online account.
- Monitor EPath: Notices will be issued and tracked digitally through the state’s online tax system
To avoid potential discrepancies in communication with DOR, remote sellers should verify the email address associated with their South Dakota EPath account. The simplified path to do this is to log into EPath, select Change Profile, choose Email Reminder, and confirm or update the email address on file.
